Prelude FLNG Mammoth Starts Journey to Australia

Shell’s Prelude floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) project, the world’s largest offshore facility ever constructed, has started its journey from South Korea to Australia.

According to AIS data provided by MarineTraffic, the 300,000 gross ton vessel departed Samsung Heavy Industry’s Geoje shipyard in the early hours of June 29.

The 488-meter-long Prelude FLNG will be towed over 3,000 nautical miles by Terasea Hawk, Tereasea Falcon and Terasea Osprey, operated by Singapore-based offshore service contractor POSH Terasea. AIS data shows that the vessel is scheduled to arrive at Australia’s Browse Basin on July 30.

Once it reaches its destination, the FLNG facility will be positioned before it begins production at the Prelude gas field in the Browse LNG Basin, 108 nautical miles off the northwest coast.

The Shell Prelude FLNG facility features a fully loaded displacement capacity of about 600,000 tons, and has around 260,000 tons of steel in the facility alone.

Monthly Volumes Surge at Port of Long Beach

The US Port of Long Beach handled 8.7 percent more volumes in January 2017 than a year earlier, driven by renewed activity at its largest terminal and extra ships calling ahead of the Lunar New Year.

The port’s dockworkers moved a total of 582,689 TEUs during the month, as exports surged by 10.8 percent year-over-year to 118,234 containers, while imports increased 7.4 percent to 298,990 TEUs. The port said that empties sent back to the Far East also rose 9.6 percent to 165,465.

Growth at terminals was led by the port’s Pier T terminal, controlled by Terminal Investment Limited (TIL), a subsidiary of Mediterranean Shipping (MSC), after TIL purchased a majority stake in the terminal following the bankruptcy of Hanjin Shipping last year.

It was a tough benchmark, so we’re very happy with the way the new year is starting in Long Beach,” Lori Ann Guzmán, Board of Harbor Commissioners President, said.

Guzmán added that the port will be laser-focused on furthering its new partnership with MSC and “continuing to provide efficient and rapid service.”

With new alliances beginning this spring, the Port of Long beach expects that 2017 will be a transition year for the industry.

With 175 shipping lines connecting Long Beach to 217 seaports, the port handles USD 180 billion in trade annually.

Port of Seattle Joins Coalition to Cut GHG Emissions

The Port of Seattle joined the national coalition We Are Still In, the alliance of governments, colleges, and businesses committed to meeting the greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction goals of the Paris Agreement to combat climate change.

We are actively cutting greenhouse gas emissions from port operations and working with our tenants to assist them in reducing their GHG emissions,” John Creighton, Port Commissioner, said.

Leadership to make our carbon footprint smaller is crucial to reducing the threat of global temperature rise,” Creighton added.

The Commission also pledged support for Climate Neutral Now, a United Nations-led initiative to drive more voluntary climate action.

The port’s emission reduction goals mirror those in the Paris Agreement, including a 50-percent reduction by 2030 and a 100-percent-or-more reduction by 2050, compared to 2005 emission levels.

Port of Seattle said that its carbon-reduction initiatives would see an increased use of clean energy sources, including renewable natural gas, solar, and wind power and setting goals to meet all growth in energy usage through conservation and renewable sources.

Additionally, the port would mandate that all cruise ships and other large vessels plug into electric power or burn low-sulfur diesel while at berth.

Seattle would collaborate with the ports of Tacoma and Vancouver, BC on the Northwest Ports Clean Air Strategy, to improve air quality in the entire Salish Sea air shed.

Port of Esbjerg Eyes Expansion

As disclosed, within the next few years, the expectation is that the port’s areas and quay will be fully utilized.

To be able to meet future demand, the port said it needs to further expand with approximately 1 million square meters and 1 km of additional quay length from 2022 to 2030.

We anticipate growing demand for areas at the port. Therefore, we must prepare for the future and clarify the possibilities for continuing a stepwise expansion of the port,” Ole Ingrisch, Director at the Port of Esbjerg, commented.

The formal environmental impact assessment process, including public consultations, is expected to start in the early autumn.

The Port of Esbjerg has a current area of 4.5 million square meters. In 2016, the port’s cargo turnover was 4.5 million tons, with 6.626 ship calls.

West African Gas Adds LPG Carrier Duo

Featuring 38,000 cbm, the new vessels, named MT Africa Gas and MT Sahara Gas, are expected to “ensure stability in the supply of LPG,” according to WAGL, a joint venture company of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) and Sahara Energy.

With a length of 174 meters and a width of 30 meters, the new carriers have a marter value of around USD 40 million each, according to data provided by Vessels Value.

“I am particularly delighted that the venture we started a few years ago has achieved this enviable milestone as we take delivery of these vessels,” Maikanti Baru, the Group Managing Director of NNPC, said.

WAGL was established in March 2013 while the shipbuilding contract for the two 37,500 mt LPG carriers was entered into in May 2014.

You should know the skills of container loading

There are usually three methods of container packing: all loaded with manpower, forklift truck (forklift) into the box, and manpower stacking and all mechanical packing. Such as pallet cargo used forklift truck in the box stacking.

1. In any case when the goods loaded, the weight of the goods can’t exceed the maximum load capacity of the container. Under normal circumstances, the total weight and weight will be marked on the container door.

2. The density of each container unit is certain. So when loading the same kind of goods in the container, as long as the density of goods, you can determine whether the heavy or light goods.

3. The load to make the load on the bottom of the balance. Especially, it is necessary to strictly prohibit the load center of gravity at one end of the situation.

4. To avoid generating a concentrated load.

5. The use of human loading should pay attention to whether the packaging "can’t be inverted", "flat", "vertical release" and other loading and unloading signs. Be sure to use the loading tool correctly and do not use the hand hook. The goods contained in the container are loaded neatly and packed tightly.

6, loading cargo board cargo, to accurately grasp the internal dimensions of the container and the external packaging of goods size. In order to calculate the quantity of loading.

7. With a forklift truck packing, will be the height of the mechanical lifting height and mast height restrictions.

Finally, the goods are best not to bare, at least to have a packaging, do not save space and cause damage to the goods. The general goods will be packaged, only such as large machines such as boilers, building materials and the like will be more trouble, must be tied, tied to prevent loosening. In fact, as long as careful, it will not be too much of a problem.

You should know about container mixed goods

In the process of loading, the general business is mainly worried about the wrong goods, cargo damage and data and customs data does not meet, resulting in customs will not release. Therefore, before the loading, the consignor, warehouse, freight forwarding must be reconciled and thoughtful to avoid this happening.

1. As far as possible not to put different shapes, different packaging of goods together.

2. As far as possible not to pack from the packaging will be dust, liquid, moisture, odor and other goods and other goods together. In the case of last resort, it is necessary to use canvas, plastic film or other materials separated.

3. Light weight of the goods on the relatively heavy weight of the goods above.

4. The packaging strength of weak goods to be placed on the strong packaging of goods above.

5. Liquid goods and clean goods should be placed under other goods as far as possible.

6. Sharp corners or prominent parts of the goods, to be covered to avoid damage to other goods.

Do you know the concept of First-level agent and Second-level agent?

Freight forwarding has two levels. First-level agent has a US dollar invoice, and Second-level agent must be to the IRS billing.

First-level agent can be made directly to the shipping company, but not necessarily eligible to book. There are many shipping companies only designated a few freight forwarding as a booking hat. Most of the level can only be limited to a few shipping companies have the right to book.

There is a booking right of the freight forwarding does not necessarily get a good price and service. There are many cases, booking freight forwarding instead to go through his booking that the freight forwarding (other Second-level agent) to take the price and accommodation.

Freight forwarding is very normal.

Port (Shanghai, Ningbo) freight forwarding is not necessarily first-level agent, more than 90% of the port freight forwarding is also no freight forwarding or second-level agent.

The nature of non-vessel carriers is the same as first-level agent. The former is approved by the Ministry of Communications, which is approved by foreign trade and economic cooperation; before the sea can be issued invoices, the latter can only use proxy invoices. The two can open the dollar invoice.

Choose freight forwarding mainly to see his services, service is the key. Of course, the price is cheap and cheap. Hope that we can find their favorite freight forwarding.

Do you know the difference between freight forwarding and logistics?

The freight forwarding is a freight forwarder, not the actual carrier of the shipping company.

Freight forwarding and logistics (third party), freight companies are essentially the same.

The freight forwarding is different from the shipping. The ship can represent the shipping company to deal with the booking, signing, change orders, boxes and other work.

The main work of the freight forwarding is booking, customs, transportation and other work, not what can be done.

The declaration is not necessarily the declaration line (company), freight forwarding can also be reported, and some freight forwarding only do the declaration of things, other things he does not do!

The owner of the booking must be through the freight forwarding to the shipping company booking, the shipping company took your owner of the single, and ultimately to do through the freight forwarding.

LCL booking is not set to the shipping company, but by the freight forwarding company set, the shipping companies generally do not accept LCL, so LCL is generally not a shipping company bill of lading.

Converted Liner in Wartime

Why Liners Can Be Converted into Troopships
In wartime ocean liners are usually converted into ships that are to carry troops. There are reasons for which liners are able to be modified into troopships. One of them is that men are the critical component of a country’s military power and the vessels are so large that they can ferry a large number of men over the ocean. The second reason would be that merchant ships are fast, so when faced with undersea threats or those overhead, speed is what people can rely on. Third, unlike ships featured with the capacity of taking troops, some can be refitted to become merchant ships with arms which go hunting on the sea for counterparts from rivalries. On top of all the abovementioned, hospital ships come into being upon modifications and wards are designed for the wounded from battlefields to safe places.

What Conversion Is Like
Usually a ship has all kinds of spaces and facilities for different purposes to meet passengers’ needs, but some of them will be of no use when a war takes place, which therefore removed to make room for military purposes, beds for instance.

The defensive attribute of arms is important to warships. However, sometimes the arms are not meant to be used in aggressive attacks, but either to defend the ship from unexpected assaults of other waterborne armed vehicles or against warplanes by lowering their attacking precision.

Another thing to take into account is to make the troopship in protective colors, also known as camouflage. In fact, this application has caused a heated debate whether it is useful in practice. Some experts just give credit to it for somewhat calming scared soldiers down.

How Are Converted Ships after Wars
It is said that the uninstalled items will be kept and then as soon as the war ends re-installed within the ship. But unfortunately, it seems that not many modified liners survived wars. Famous ships in history include Olympic, Queen Mary, Queen Elizabeth 2 and the list goes on, which were among those converted into troopships during wartime.

CMA CGM to Acquire Mercosul Line from Maersk Line

French liner company CMA CGM has signed a binding deal with Danish counterpart Maersk Line to acquire Mercosul Line that operates in Brazil’s domestic container shipping market.
As explained, the acquisition of Mercosul Line would allow CMA CGM to strengthen its service offering to and from South America, most notably in Brazil, which was described as “a market with a strong potential for development, especially on cabotage and “door-to-door” services.”
CMA CGM said that the move forms part of its strategy to develop intra-regional sea transportation links and complementary services such as logistics.
The Mercosul transaction is subject to Brazilian regulatory approval and the closing of Maersk’s Hamburg Süd acquisition. At the earliest, the integration of Mercosul within CMA CGM will start at the same time as the Hamburg Süd integration, which is expected in Q4 2017. Until then, Mercosul Line will continue business as usual, a joint statement read.
“The transaction will ensure that the cabotage sector in Brazil remains competitive and that customers continue to benefit from a comprehensive choice of carriers,” the statement further added.
Maersk Line might have been prompted to sell the liner company as a way of making sure the relevant regulatory authorities approve the merger with the German carrier.
Namely, Hamburg Süd already has a subsidiary in Brazil, Alianca Navegacao e Logistica, which is a major cabotage carrier along the Brazilian coastline. Keeping Mercosul would have pushed Maersk’s control of South America East Coast’s cabotage to 80 percent.
To remind, Maersk Line said it would acquire Hamburg Süd for EUR 3.7 billion (USD 4 billion) on a cash and debt-free basis, which it plans to fully finance through an already secured syndicated loan facility.
The proposed acquisition received an approval from the US Department of Justice on March 23, 2017, while the EU Commission approved the deal on April 10, 2017, subject to conditions.
The acquisition still remains subject to some other regulatory approvals, however, Maersk said earlier that it expects to close the transaction by the end of 2017.
According to Rodolphe Saadé, Chief Executive Officer of CMA CGM, the acquisition of Mercosul represents a “milestone in CMA CGM’s development strategy in South America.”
“It is a well-managed company and we will leverage this platform to expand our footprint and service offerings to and from Latin America, seizing opportunities linked to the high growth prospects in this region.”
“ CMA CGM is a good fit for Mercosul and we are confident that they will continue to develop the company going forward,” says Søren Toft, Chief Operating Office, Maersk Line.
The parties have decided not to publicly disclose the price of the sale.
Launched in 1996 and acquired by Maersk in 2006, Mercosul Line has a fleet of four ships that operate in Brazil and South America. Mercosul employs 92 land based staff and 160 seafarers.
As disclosed by the duo, the company reported revenues of USD 128 million in 2016 and offers strong profitability.

US Customs Strict Inspection on Imports from China

US Customs checked and detained counterfeit products worth 130 million dollars with an increase of more than 50% above the historical average, most of which were exported from Mainland China or Hong Kong.
To further prevent potential fake goods from entering into the US market, US Customs and Border Protection initiated activities for international travelers’ understanding about the harm of counterfeiting in Kennedy International Airport, for counterfeits resulting not only in unemployment but also committing crimes.
As introduced by an officer, Brenda Smith, in US Customs and Border Protection, the very large number of fake products detained by the country last year could have brought severe damage to its economic well-being and caused a reduction on domestic employment opportunities.
US Customs Tightened Inspection on Chinese Exports
MK, Dior, Apple, Nike and so on were brands whose products have been counterfeited.
Brenda told that inspection regarding imports from China would be tightened with respect to clothing, bags, cosmetics and foods.
Harm of Counterfeits
Brenda said, how counterfeiting ultimately leads to crimes lied in activities such as money laundering, smuggling, illegal sale of guns, drug trafficking and taking, etc.
It is not difficult to imagine how companies selling certified goods would suffer from people’s consumption of fake counterparts. Another thing to be considered is that consumers’ health may be compromised as raw materials to produce those knock-offs usually are bought cheap and produced under messy and uncontrolled environments.
Awareness-raising Publicity Continuing
Following the promotion in Kennedy International Airport on June 7, more demonstrations would be conducted in other busy airports nationwide before the end of July which include ones in Baltimore, Chicago and so forth.
Counterfeit Product Categories
According the website 24/7 Wall St., information released by US Customs and Border Protection shows aggregate values of detained counterfeits from high to low.
1. Shoes: $99.8 million (accounting for 38%)
2. Electronics: $31.8 million (accounting for 12%)
3. Bags: $21.5 million (accounting for 8%)

How To Save The Charge For Using The Port?

Charge for use of port is one of the major expenses for carrying goods. Sometimes it amounts to more than a quarter of the total cost. Consequently to save this charge is a must for reducing shipping cost for ocean freight companies. Generally the cost-saving strategies on using a port can enforced by the following means.
1. Various fee charging rules and occasional adjustments must be understood.
2. Record-keeping should be applied while relevant operations within the port are appropriately dealt with.
3. Time management is vital for the ship’s arrival at and departure from the port because additional fees would be charged during nighttime and holidays.
4. If possible, minimize the maximum draft of the ship, as the pilot fee of some ports, the ones of Japan for example, is based on the gross tonnage and the maximum draft of the ship.
5. Declaration about ship tonnage should be correct since tonnage tax, port dues and lighthouse dues are calculated on that basis. A large tonnage should be declared for a tonnage mark underwater whereas a small one for the mark above water.
6. Proper cargo stowage is needed. Try to operate multiple cargoes at every time to shorten the time length of the ship’s staying at the port.
7. Sound preparations is also a factor that boost the efficiency of operations and can make the ship free from a waiting charge.
8. Prudence, last but not least, should be emphasized when to verify and sign all kinds of bills in case unnecessary loses take place.
